History/Fun Facts:

  • The existing Parks Dept. service station was once home to the lively Park House, providing local residents with vital public programming from arts and crafts to community meeting space until its conversion to Parks storage in 1994.

  • The M'Finda Kaluga Community Garden sits on a historical African American burial ground

Grand St. to Delancey St.

Programming:

  • Lion’s Gate Field 
  • Hua Mei Bird Garden, located in the Lower East Side by the edge of Chinatown. Wide range of birds - black chickadees and different colorful finches 

Current Efforts:

  • SDR Park received a substantial grant to undertake a re-design and beautification for the park. 

History/Fun Facts:

  • The park is named Sara Delano Rooselvelt, the name of the garden is M’Finda Kalunga, The driving force behind the establishment of M’Finda Kalunga and the transformation of Sara D. Park is none other than Robert Humber, also known as Bob.

Canal St. to Grand St.

Programming:

  • Handball Court 
  • Basketball Courts 
  • Hester St. Playground, located in the heart of Chinatown is a play oasis to many educational institutions and locals 
  • Sara D Roosevelt Park Track, offers the public running tracks made with the same material as the tracks used by professional Olympic runners.

Current Efforts:

  • The community is actively working towards revitalizing and beautifying the park area through a series of regular activities and workshops, often featuring local artists and community organizations. 

History/Fun Facts:

  • The city acquired the parkland in 1929 with initial plans to develop affordable housing. However, it was eventually designated for the creation of ‘playgrounds and spaces for mothers and children to rest’.

Sara D. Roosevelt Park spans from Houston St in the north down to Canal St in the south. SDR Park provides outdoor recreational space for many neighborhoods including the Bowery, Chinatown, Lower East Side, East Village, Two Bridges, Civic Center, Little Italy, Nolita, and Noho and serves a diverse variety of socioeconomic and ethnic groups. It is truly a park for the people of New York City.
